Iyer is going to have surgery on his back, which has been bothering him for a while. This is very bad news for the Delhi Capitals, because Iyer has been a key part of their middle order for many years.
Iyer had back trouble during the IPL season of 2022 and had to miss a few games because of it. He was able to get back in shape in time for the T20 World Cup in 2022, but his form was inconsistent, and he didn’t have a big impact on the event. Iyer was then taken off the Indian team for the ODI series against South Africa, and it was found that he needed surgery to fix the problem.
In a statement, the Delhi Capitals stated that Iyer would not be on their team for the next season. The statement said, “We’re sorry to say that Shreyas Iyer won’t be able to play in the IPL 2023 season because of a back injury.” We hope he gets better quickly and sees him back on the field soon.”
Iyer has always done well for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He has scored over 2200 runs in 82 games, with an average of 31.80 and a strike rate of 128.28. He has also done a great job as captain, bringing the team to the IPL 2020 final.
Iyer not being in the Indian team for the final of the World Test Championship versus New Zealand is also a big problem. Iyer played his first Test earlier this year against England. In his two innings, he scored 67 and 61, which were all good numbers. Against New Zealand’s well-rounded assault, his ability to play spin and score swiftly in the middle overs would have been useful.
But Iyer’s injury gives other players a chance to show that they should be on the Indian team. Suryakumar Yadav, Hanuma Vihari, and Prithvi Shaw will be competing for a slot in the middle order. KL Rahul might also be considered for the job.
In the end, Shreyas Iyer’s injury is a big setback for both the Delhi Capitals and the Indian team.
